Flow Rate

Volume passing through a system per unit time. Always compare values at the same pressure or head.

Head

Energy per unit weight of liquid, expressed as liquid-column height. It includes the resistance the pump must overcome.

Pressure

Force per unit area. Identify whether a stated pressure is gauge, absolute or differential.

Voltage

Electrical potential difference at the pump terminals; include supply tolerance and startup conditions.

Current

Electrical charge flow. Startup, normal operation and stalled conditions may draw different currents.

Power

Rate of energy use. DC electrical input power is voltage multiplied by current at the measured operating point.

Brushless Motor

A motor using electronic commutation instead of mechanical brushes. Lifetime still depends on the entire pump assembly and operating conditions.

Diaphragm Pump

A pump using a moving diaphragm and valves to transfer gas or liquid. Output may be pulsating.

Centrifugal Pump

An impeller transfers energy to liquid. Flow depends on the intersection of the pump and system curves.

Dry Run

Operation without the intended liquid. Whether it is permitted depends on the specific pump design.

PWM

Control by varying the duty ratio of a pulse signal. Confirm the approved signal level, frequency and wiring.

IP Rating

An enclosure classification for ingress protection. Use the rating and test conditions provided for the specific model.

Duty Cycle

The operating and rest pattern over time. State both on-time and off-time, not just a percentage.

Noise Level

A measured acoustic quantity that depends on distance, mounting, background noise and operating conditions.

Lifetime

A reliability measure that requires defined test conditions, sample size and an end-of-life criterion.
